The NewSouth Bookstore actively hosts bookstore and off-site literary programs — book talks and readings — along with a variety of other programs both entertaining and educational. These include presentations by historians, readings of plays, music events, and community service programs. We enjoy such gatherings quite a lot. Our bookstore events calendar is always evolving, so please regularly check back here for updates to our calendar (and/or follow us on social media, where all such activities are also posted). We welcome your event suggestions and thank you for your support.
February gives us the chance to welcome Kirk Curnutt to The NewSouth Bookstore for a program we’re calling “10 Things Alabamians Should Know About Zora Neale Hurston.” Join the chair of Troy University’s English department for a countdown of the Top 10 Alabama-adjacent facts every literature lover should know about Zora Neale Hurston (1891—1960). You probably know ZNH as the author of Their Eyes Were Watching God (1937), but there’s a lot more to this multidimensional writer, folklorist, journalist, and anthropologist — including her deep ties to our very own state. Dr. Curnutt’s scholarship in the area guarantees his will be a rich and illuminating talk.
