NewSouth Bookstore

The NewSouth Bookstore actively hosts bookstore and off-site literary programs — book talks and readings — along with a variety of other programs both entertaining and educational. These include presentations by historians, readings of plays, music events, and community service programs. We enjoy such gatherings quite a lot. Our bookstore events calendar is always evolving, so please regularly check back here for updates to our calendar (and/or follow us on social media, where all such activities are also posted). We welcome your event suggestions and thank you for your support.

Join The NewSouth Bookstore at the Historic First Baptist Church for The Durr Lecture: Sat., April 6 at 6:30pm.

April 6 @ 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm

The NewSouth Bookstore will be offsite on Saturday, April 6 at 6:30pm, at the historic First Baptist Church (347 Ripley Street), for a talk and signing by Hasan Kwame Jeffries, author and history professor at Ohio State University. The program is in connection with the 2024 Clifford and Virginia Durr Lecture. Jeffries is the author of Bloody Lowndes, his seminal work on the birth of Black power in Lowndes County, Alabama. The book for the first time tells the remarkable full story of the Lowndes County freedom struggle and its contribution to the larger civil rights movement. Jeffries continues to push the boundaries of our understanding about our nation’s complicated African American history, through lectures, teacher workshops, journalism pieces, and through the podcast “Teaching Hard History.” Don’t miss this opportunity to hear his voice on the subject.
