The NewSouth Bookstore actively hosts bookstore and off-site literary programs — book talks and readings — along with a variety of other programs both entertaining and educational. These include presentations by historians, readings of plays, music events, and community service programs. We enjoy such gatherings quite a lot. Our bookstore events calendar is always evolving, so please regularly check back here for updates to our calendar (and/or follow us on social media, where all such activities are also posted). We welcome your event suggestions and thank you for your support.
The Trouble of Color: An American Family Memoir is being hailed as a lyrical, deeply felt meditation on the most fundamental matters of identity, belonging, and family. Author Martha S. Jones — our special guest at The NewSouth Bookstore on Sunday, March 2 at 3pm — is a prizewinning scholar of Black history, who gives us a powerful chronicle of American lives made by the color line. Her new book is a remarkable family history over five generations — intimate and searching. Imani Perry says of Jones, “the author writes with the intellect and vigor of a superb historian.” Come meet Martha Jones and listen firsthand to a story that provides surprising insights into our collective past.
